AnDroiDreamZ - Deep Sleep
More Sights, More Soundz!  The full length Xtended vision & the story behind the AnDroiDreamZ project.
.
How it began...
Back in October of 2009, a few things came together that led to the creation of "AnDroiDreamZ".  I had already been vigorously promoting PM's amazing animated apophysis fractal creations at the site and she was ready to start making a new one.  I had also just gotten a very kewl music making program called Sony Acid Pro 7 that I was literally itching to try out.  PM was having problems getting the music she was using past the sensors at youtube, (because of copyright issues), so she actually offered to animate whatever I came up with using this new program of mine, (a very BRAVE move on her part, now that I think about it!).
.
The music is created
So, with the inspiration of trying to make something that would sound GOOD as a background to PM's fractal images, I got to work on the theme song.  Keep in mind, I have NO musical training & I really had NO IDEA what I was doing with this new program, but through MUCH trial and error, and after listening to literally HUNDREDS of various "loops" and sounds that the program offered, I finally pieced together a ditty that wasn't too long and sounded (I thought) "half decent".  I sent it to Mrs."X" who uploaded it onto her iPod touch, took it upstairs, plugged it into the stereo, and literally played it 30 times in a row!  I thought, "well, it MUST be catchy", and then sent it to PM for her thoughts on the tune.
.
Music accepted (but not "complete")
PM said she thought the music was GREAT, (I wasn't really sure if she was just being polite or not!), and got to work on animating it.  As I mentioned, I didn't really want to make a tune that was too long, as I KNOW the work that PM puts into these animations, so I kept it short.  However, I felt the tune was really "incomplete", because of the time restrictions I had in its length.  So, for my own satisfaction, I completed the tune "properly" and to my liking.  I sent it to PM so she could hear the "long version".  It was minutes longer than the original, but MUCH better (in my mind) and I jokingly said to her, "are you SURE you don't want to animate this one instead?".  The concept was just silly though, as PM had never made an animation that long, and neither of us could imagine her doing so!
.
A name is devised and a general "theme" is conceived
One day while I was "composing" and listening to the theme music, a sort of "vision" came to me.  I 'saw' a robot dreaming in my mind, and in this dream were hundreds of other robots working and marching to the music!  Now I know this must sound strange, but often while I am working on "art", I get these sort of images (or thoughts, I guess), and this is how I usually put a name to the project I am creating.  So I decided that I would call the tune "Android Dreams", but when I wrote it out on paper I got the thought of writing it as "AnDroiDreamZ" instead.  Why, I'm not sure, but I liked it because it had the caps "ADDZ" in it, and while creating the music I was continually "adding" the beats in my mind in increments of 4's, 8's, 12's, etc.  PLUS, I figured an "android" would likely be great at arithmetic, so the name stuck!  Now I had previously assumed that PM would be naming this project (as it is HER artwork that is the MAIN focus of it), but I asked her what she thought about the name, and as "luck" would have it, she LOVED it!  So we now had a name, and a general theme (and "feel") for the video.
.
Additional artwork and credits are created
So, now that PM and I had a name and a theme for the project, I got to work on the little "details" that I thought would look good and "professional".  The first thing I did was create a "logo", which is the android head seen at the beginning of the video(s).  I had a sort of idea of what I wanted this logo to look like, but had no idea how I was going to accomplish it.  I tried a few drawings at first, but they weren't doing it for me, so I turned to the internet for some ideas.  I searched and searched, but didn't want to "steal" someone else's artwork.  Then I got the idea to search "mannequins" on google and stumbled upon a glass wig head!  I manipulated the image to my liking, (and in my mind, that made it MY image, LOL!), and an AnDroiD head was born!  Now that I had the logo, I could start on the credits.  Once again, after MUCH trial and error (and SEVERAL days work), a "beginning" and an "end" to the project were made.  I also created the final wee "tune" for the end credits.
.
PM's incredible "vision" is (almost) realized...
So now that the music was done, the logo and theme created, the opening and closing credits finally completed, all that was left to wait for was the finished animation PM had been working on during all the above mentioned individual "projects" I had personally been working on.  Now try to imagine both PM's excitement, as well as my own so far!  I had hurriedly completed a rather "unfinished" tune so that PM could immediately get to work on animating.  PM then saw and heard the work I had done and also got all excited about finishing her animation to "complete" the project.  We were BOTH motivating each other, and AnDroiDreamZ quickly became a "completed" project, and was actually officially released in UNDER one month from its initial conception, (WOW!).  I still can't believe how quickly both PM and I actually put it all together.  It was a true "labor of love" on both our parts, and we were BOTH very keen on seeing what this "final" video would look like!  The "original" AnDroiDreamZ release has been a HUGE success, (in my opinion).  It has so far averaged over 100 views per week (as I write this), and has 630 views in 6 weeks.  Now this will obviously "die down" over time, but we have to remember that it will be on YouTube FOREVER, and over the YEARS that it will be, I am confident that it will eventually become a TRUE CLASSIC in fractal animations.  You can view this first finished work of the "project" HERE.
.
An after thought occurs, and the 'DroiD gets a Deeper Sleep!
While PM was animating the original "Kat-Nap" version of AnDroiDreamZ, she confessed to me that she had wished that she had actually worked on the longer "Deep-Sleep" version of the song instead.  She had listened to my "x"tended Deep Sleep miX several times and realized it truly WAS the "finished version" of my very first official electronic tune!  Of course, she was already far too into her animation of the FIRST version to turn back now, and we were BOTH content that it would be the success that it has proven to be.  BUT, after it was all done and over with, PM suddenly ALSO realized that instead of starting on a NEW project, she could CONTINUE on her original vision of ADDZ and create new fractals to "fill in" the "x"tra segments of the longer Deep Sleep version of the tune.  After asking me if she could, and hearing me ask in return "are you SURE you want to do all this 'x'tra work?" several times, she did just that...animated this VERY long tune, using her original images, with fascinating NEW images AND effects to complete her FINAL vision of my FINAL rendition of the theme music.

The FINAL vision: Ready to be viewed and FULLY appreciated!
So here it FINALLY is, the FINISHED and COMPLETE video to the AnDroiDreamZ project.  With the creation of THIS page here at MisterX.ca, (about 3 months AFTER the original idea of creating it), AnDroiDreamZ is FINALLY "complete".  It is the final MUSIC as I wanted it to be heard, and the final VISION as PM wanted it to be seen.  You now know the FULL STORY of how it came to be.  You also know WHY there are 2 different versions to this project and have an idea of the actual work that went into it.

Really, it was a project created SOLELY for the purpose of CREATING, and that is ALWAYS the BEST artwork of all!  I'm SURE you will agree that the vision PM and I mutually came up with, (and completed) is truly a "MASTERPIECE" in its own right, (if I DO say so myself), and is something that will be viewed for MANY years to come on the internet!

Now, please watch this FINAL creation, then continue on to read the interview I had with PM afterwards that gives a further glimpse into the creation of this fascinating, co-produced, animated fractal creation.  (You will also find free downloads relating to this project at the bottom of this page).

I hope you will ENJOY the "x"tended and completed vision :)

A brief interview with PM/ARK

X:  First of all PM, I have to THANK YOU so VERY MUCH for letting me play such a big part in one of your amazing animations.  I am truly "tickled pink" to be able to have my name associated with these AnDroiDreamZ videos.  I haven't told you this, but as an artist, I have NEVER worked on a "collaboration" before.  To me, "art" is a very personal thing, so I have never even considered doing such a thing in the past.  I have to say though, I found this VERY satisfying!  For one thing, it totally motivated me in my work, and I found that I wanted to "please you" in the work I was creating!  I guess my 1st question to you is this:  What was it like for YOU to be working with another artist?  Did you find it satisfying like I did, or was it stressful, or otherwise?
PM:  I would like to THANK YOU very much, X, for creating such a great song to work with and for working with me on these videos! I, too, felt very motivated to come up something worthy to go along with your tune. I think I may have felt a fleeting twinge of stress at the beginning of the project because I knew it was going to be something very different from my previous animations and I had no idea what the final outcome would be!  After that initial feeling, though, I soon could see that the music and images would work well together and found the rest of the process quite fun and, yes, also very satisfying!

X:  Although I have yet to try my luck with animating fractals, I certainly have some experience in creating individual images and I know how long I can take making just one of them.  For instance, I fiddle around with a flame, make it "just so", play with the colors, the position, the zoom, etc, and then when I go to render it, it isn't unusual for it to take 30 to 45 minutes before the final image is realized.  Now this is just for ONE fractal!  How the heck are you creating the HUNDREDS of images required to make an actual movie?  I know there is an animation script involved, but you MUST be actually making dozens and dozens of individual fractals too, right?  How did you manage to render all the flames required to make the first video in UNDER one month?  I am AMAZED!
PM:  The rendering of the images was the most time-consuming part of the process. It would literally take hours upon hours to complete a batch, just to get enough images to make a few seconds of video.  There were many times that I would start the rendering process before going to bed or to work, so it was almost an around-the-clock production at times.

X:  Now this is probably a tough question for you, but as a "guesstimate", how many individual fractal images do you think were used for the above AnDroiDreamZ-DeepSleep video?
PM:  Most of the video was done at 100 frames per second, so, if I did the math correctly, there are about 42,000 (give or take) fractal images in ADDZ-DS.

X:  OK, so NOW I have to ask:  How many TOTAL fractals do you think you made (rendered) DURING the creation of ADDZ-DS?  (including the fractals that you DID NOT use!)
PM:  In addition to the 42,000 images that I did use, there was probably another 30,000 or more that I did not use.  Rendering the images at a lower resolution goes much faster, so, to make sure the flames I was using would animate well, I would render them at a low resolution first. If they animated well, then I would render them at a higher quality to use in the final version. I've deleted most of those rough images and animations from my computer (due to all the memory they were eating up), so I'm not sure of the exact amount, but I know it was a lot!

X:  How many programs did you use to make the above animation, and what were those programs?
PM:  I used 4 programs to make the video. The programs I used were: Apophysis208_3Dhack (fractal program) along with a script called Apophymator, which would render the batches of images. I took those images and plugged them into a .gif animation program and then converted those .gifs to .avis, using yet another program. I used Windows Movie Maker (a program that came with my computer) to make the final product.

X:  As I mentioned above, I thought you were VERY brave to actually offer to animate a tune I was going to create, (especially since you hadn't heard it and had no idea what I would send your way!).  I know that this tune was something totally different than what you were used to animating in the past, so I have to ask:  What was it like to animate this song?  Do you think the faster beat hindered or helped you, or perhaps it was no different at all?
PM:  I loved working with the faster beat! It was more of a challenge than my previous animations because I had to make a lot more images, but the upbeat tempo was exciting to work with and not a hindrance in any way. I also liked working with so many different types of flames, as opposed to the more star-like and flowery type fractals I had used before. As I began working on the original ADDZ, I saw, quite early, that I was going to need a lot more images than I had used in previous videos and, by using several different flame types, I was able to (hopefully) keep the video more interesting.

X:  I was SO thrilled to be a part of all this that I even made a little "PMX Production" logo that appears in the end credits!  Now IF I EVER find the time to make another electronic tune in the future, is there a chance you might be interested in animating it too?!  I guess what I'm asking is:  Might there be another "PMX Production" one day in the future?
PM:  This is the easiest question of all! I would love to work on another "production" using one of your tunes! I'm ready when you are!

X:  So, I guess if I am really to keep this "brief" as I have it listed above as, I should now stop asking questions!  Thank you so much once again for the opportunity to be a part of something that I consider VERY wonderful and I am VERY proud of :)  Is there anything else you would like to add here?
PM:  I would like say thank you to you again, too, X! I learned so much more about making these fractal animations while working on these videos and I had a blast working with you and your tune! Also, I would like to add that the DeviantArt website is an excellent source of information for anyone out there who might be interested in trying their hand at fractal art. Many of the basic fractals that were used in these videos came from that site, either from using a script, a flame, or a tutorial that was posted there. And, a special "thank you" goes to my friend Ria, who introduced me to fractal art almost 2 years ago. (I had never even heard of it before she told us about it at the Flakey Forum!)  BIG THANKS to all who read this and who view my videos, fractals, and/or snowflakes for your interest and support!!!  -  PM :o))))))
